Scientific Collaboration On Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid

2011     brd

As the first step of SCOPSCO project, one of the five proposed drill sites is in the focus of the operations in 2011. The Lini site was selected as drilling location, as the hydro-acoustic and seismic data indicated that the sediments from this site could record tectonic activities in the region. At the Lini site, a ca. 10 m long sediment sequence is recovered by means of the UWITEC platform and piston corer technology. Stormy weather prevented the recovery of deeper sediments and caused a complete loss of the UWITEC platform at the end. However, the sediments recovered from Lini site document a heavy earthquake, which likely destroyed the city of Ohrid ca. 1500 years before today.
