Scientific Collaboration On Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid

The first hydro-acoustic studies in Lake Ohrid took place in 2004 and were followed by more detailed seismic profiling in 2007 and 2008. The results of these seismic studies indicated that the central basin is filled with up to approx. 680 m of sediments, which are likely undisturbed. The uppermost ca. 15 m of these sediments were already recovered within the scope of several field campaigns between 2004 and 2011 and revealed that Lake Ohrid is a valuable archive of climate change, tectonic activity (earthquakes), and eruptions of Italian volcanoes.

The deep drilling campairgn was originally scheduled for autumn 2012, but had to be shifted due to the accident of "MSC Flaminia" (on which the drilling equipment was transported from the USA to Europe) into spring 2013.
